Ewloe Castle - Castle Number 10 in the Castle Casanovas Challenge

We're finally into the double digits in respect of the Castle Casanovas Challenge - Hello if you are new to the challenge, we are pushing to visit every castle in the UK (with caveats) and you can read more about the challenge in general here

Ewloe is a stunning castle set in the middle of a forest and whilst it bears the same distinctive features of the Welsh castles its location sets it apart from all others.

There is not much information known about Ewloe castle. It is believed to have been built after 1210 by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great) and started life as a D-shaped tower. It is believed the crtain walls and circular wester tower were added some 60 years lated by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (Llywelyn the Last) and sadly, that is all I have been able to find out about Ewloe Castle.

Ewloe castle is open all year around. It does state on the website it is closed on Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, but I did not see anything that would suggest they could close the Castle as it is located directly in the middle of a set of woods.

Ewloe Castle is free to visit and definitely worth the walk to get there. We used the post code CH5 3BZ and parked at the side of the road. The castle was then a 10 minute walk down the track and then through two gates, down into the woods. You will then reach steps to take you down to the castle and then come across the above beautiful view.

Ewloe Castle took around 30 minutes to look around, but that included taking photographs and walking around. I love love love the shots we took whilst here; the moody lighting just really sets off the castle and shows her off in all her glory.

Castle 10 was a special one for us and marked the second castle we visited on the same day before heading home from our holiday.

You can keep up to date with all our antics via our social media channels and we're now posting content to YouTube as well, which is very exciting.

Until Next Time
